World Turned Upside Down

|

WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
Come ye all from far and wide
Gather all together
You and I lay chains aside
As light as a feather
Common people young and old
Take strength in one another
Today's the day we shake the world
The world turned upside
The world turned upside down
No kings, no queens, no lords above
No walls to come between us
This paradise on earth for all
It's glory for to keep us
No holy words to cast us down
Or keep us sheep to shear us
Each to choose where footsteps fall
When the world turns upside
The world turns upside down
Who wrote the laws now carved in stone
That stands one above another
Where one is born to sink so low
While raising up his brother
We're not the first, nor be the last
To hear the rhyme in reason
Raise up your voices, crack the stone
And the world turns upside,
The world turns upside down

Green Man

GREEN MAN
As I was walking in the Spring
I saw a face amidst the green
Soft leafy hair and silvered skin
The buds of May upon his skin
Oh Green Man
Spirit in the wood
Please offer up your goods
Oh Green man
With tender leaves so fine
Your golden blood for wine
The birds of Summer's chorus sing
Songs of joy for the Green King
Wild roses 'round his body twine
In tangled beard bright berries shine
Oh Green Man
King amongst the trees
With crown of emerald leaves
Oh Green Man
With Summer's gifts and treats
Come and join our feast
Autumn's come gone Summer fair
Wind whistles in his golden hair
His arms outstretched with fruits so sweet
And chestnuts lying at his feet
Oh Green Man
Skin wrinkled hard and brown
Crown shattered on the ground
Oh Green Man
You look so sad and old
Waiting for the cold
Autumn's gone now Winter's here
Green Man hides away in fear
We seek him now with axes sharp
To cut his limbs and strip his bark
Oh Green Man
We never treat you fair
Now shorn of all your hair
Oh Green Man
In fires now you burn
To keep us safe and warm

A Revel

|

A REVEL
A revel, a revel, we poor men cry
We care not if we live nor die
Free we were born to till the land
Not toil as slaves at genteel hand
We live by the sun and the Autumn leaves
The rivers we drink, the forests we breath
The sorrow, the joy, the passing of time
We suffer this life for heaven divine
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who then was the gentleman
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who then was the gentleman
Lords and ladies up on high
They never shall know the poor man's plight
We plough their fields, we shoulder their wheat
We suffer the Winter on frozen bare feet
A revel a revel, a clarion to arms
With Tyler the True, we'll come to no harm
A revel a revel, and so shall they pay
Justice will fall on the wicked this day
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who then was the gentleman
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who then was the gentleman
To London we came, the town all afire
There Tyler did fall, at the hands of a squire
Young Dickon he told us, we owned the whole earth
His words they were fine, but of little worth
A revel, a revel, the cemetery bell
Was ringing for Tyler that day that he fell
On Spitalfield's Plain, on London's fine field
That true man was taken, for the want of a kneel
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who then was the gentleman
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who then was the gentleman
A revel, a revel to homes we returned
The villages empty, now blackened and burned
A revel, a revel we danced from the trees
When lords came a riding, t'was a fine sight indeed
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who then was the gentleman
When Adam delved and Eve span
Who then was the gentleman

Old Tom

OLD TOM
You've heard the tales of London Town
A Marvel to behold
Fine buildings high and clear blue sky
And streets all paved in gold
A fortune waits for every soul
All rosy cheeked and bellyful
Beware the wolf beneath the wool
I'll show you London Town
In Rookeries were sun don't shine
No grass or flowers bloom
All colour leached to black and grey
In smoke, and sweat, and gloom
Back to back with naught to show
Bowed and bent from debts we owe
No better place to sink so low
Than darkest London Town
Drunk for a penny
Dead drunk for two
No need of bed or home
When rents are a due
No fear of Winter's cold
No care for rags nor bones
Drunk for a penny
Dead drunk for two
Pauper's Laws to grind you up
The Man to grind you down
Shuffling feet on workhouse floor
Pliant, ruined, bound
No means to rise and start anew
The palsy of St Giles for you
But gin enough to see you through
A night on London Town
Old Tom's our most beloved son
A saviour to the poor
He wraps his arms 'round everyone
A friend to one and all
A penny and he'll keep you gay
All pain and sorrow held at bay
He's always with you come what may
In lonely London Town
Young flower clings to childhood dreams
A life to call her own
Soft skin that fades and petals fall
From chills that wilt the bones
Small hands that grasp for pennies owed
Sweet innocence so cheaply sold
Ruthless streets turn young to old
In heartless London Town
When all of worth is stripped from thee
And hope can ne'er be found
When remnants of your dignity
Are well and truly drowned
When grime and crime have got to you
Make sure you're always soaked well through
Old Tom's the only friend that's true
In sodden London Town
Drunk for a penny
Dead drunk for two
No need of bed or home
When rents are a due
No fear of Winter's cold
No care for rags nor bones
Drunk for a penny
Dead drunk for two

Anna Pink

ANNA PINK
My sweetheart's name is Anna
She sails upon the sea
Slender and sleek
The pride of Anson's fleet
On her deck we muster
Our bearing's for The Horn
Promises of plunder
From Spanish galleons
Up the rigging high me boys
Sail in clear blue sky me boys
A thousand miles
and many, many more
We make for distant shores ahoy!
Keep your spirits high me boys
Eyes upon the prize me boys
Don't be glum
we'll have another rum
Good fortune's on our side ahoy!
Black skies on the horizon
Mad sirens shriek with glee
The rage of the tempest
And violence of the sea
Batten down the hatches
Clear the decking floor
Drop and drag the anchors
To keep from leeward shore
Tie the rigging down me boys
Hang on for your lives me boys
All as one
or we be dead and gone
And down with Davy Jones ahoy!
Great waves rising high me boys
Tossed from side to side me boys
Anna groans
and shakes from bow to stern
A salty end is nigh ahoy!
Our Anna's still our sweetheart
She weathered mighty storm
Now limps to the bay
Her body cracked and torn
On the master's orders
We strip her to the bone
No grave nor a headstone
A thousand miles from home
Raise your cags up high me boys
Remember her with pride me boys
Anna Pink
we drink until we sink
And slip down by your side ahoy!
The wind's gone from our sails me boys
Bellies filled with ale me boys
Pitch and yaw
and fall down to the floor
So ends this sailors tale ahoy!

Ironsides

IRONSIDES
Through hail and stone we are marching off to war
No need to fret boys we've seen it all before
Wet to the bone but there's fighting to be done
Soon Charlie's army's off and on the run
We stand, we stand, brothers to a man
Flying the flag of freedom
Heads held high, old Ironsides
We stand, we stand as one
See Royal Horses gallop on attack
Knocked to the ground and stranded on their backs
Feeling the barb of the pikeman's deadly sting
Run now to Charlie, the traitor that is king
The Cause, the Cause, the Good Old Cause
Marching on to freedom
You and I, Old Ironsides
We stand, we stand as one
Soon comes a time when the fighting will be done
Soon back to family, daughters, wives and sons
Leaving the blood of the battlefield behind
Back to our England, green and free and kind
The War, the War, the cold hard War
Fighting on for freedom
England's pride, Old Ironsides
We stand, we stand as one

May Day

MAY DAY
May has come and the sun is high
Children play and sweetheart's sigh
The finest day of all the year
Laughter, song and village cheer
No fields to work on merry day
The lord can kiss my arse today
Gathered all on village green
Soon we'll choose a fair May Queen
Twist and turn 'round the maypole
Spin and twirl 'round the maypole, maypole
Boys and girls 'round the maypole
Sweethearts found 'round the maypole
Hands held high 'round the maypole
Weave and wheel 'round the maypole, maypole
Ribbons twist 'round the maypole
Stolen kiss 'round the maypole
The fairest birch you could've dreamed
Trunk is cut adorned and cleaned
Pole is lifted high with ease
Ribbons blowing in the breeze
Garlands posies sheer delight
Our maypole stands in gold sunlight
Rising tall from sacred ground
The finest sight for miles around
Twist and turn 'round the maypole
Spin and twirl 'round the maypole, maypole
Boys and girls 'round the maypole
Sweethearts found 'round the maypole
Hands held high 'round the maypole
Weave and wheel 'round the maypole, maypole
Ribbons twist 'round the maypole
Stolen kiss 'round the maypole
Maidens tat beneath the bowers
Hair that's weaved with sweet May flowers
Sadness hardship now all gone
Hearts that beat to Spring’s sweet song
Suitors vie to show who's best
Shows of strength put to the test
Today's the day they come together
Today's the day for one another
Twist and turn 'round the maypole
Spin and twirl 'round the maypole, maypole
Boys and girls 'round the maypole
Sweethearts found 'round the maypole
Hands held high 'round the maypole
Weave and wheel 'round the maypole, maypole
Ribbons twist 'round the maypole
Stolen kiss 'round the maypole

Forest Law

FOREST LAW
A falling star for fallen king
We face the horror battle brings
His body crushed in Hastings mud
Defeated now we'll pay in blood
With hanging heads we mourn our king
Dreading what the future brings
With heavy hearts we stumble West
Where hearth and love and life is blessed
No king, no fyrd, no priest, nor herd
For William's put them to the sword
No king, no fyrd, no priest, nor herd
A people shamed before the Lord
Wardens force us from our homes
Salted earth on father's bones
Once free men in woodland glade
Now bear the yoke that tyrant made
No bow to hunt, nor net for fish
Just blackened bread upon our dish
Crushed beneath the Conqueror's heel
Starving now from wick to weald
No more, no more, no Forest Law
We'll make the woods our home once more
No more, no more, no Forest Law
And never shall we hope foreswore
From head to toe in hue of green
We move as spirit folk unseen
To hunt again, the hart and hare
Let horseman come now if he dare
And when they come, and come they will
On forest floor French blood will spill
We'll draw our bows, we'll make the shot
Let arrow pierce where sword will not
No more, no more, no Forest Law
We'll spill their blood on forest floor
No more, no more, no Forest Law
Awaken now the people's lore

Coppernose

COPPERNOSE
With frame as wide as he is tall
You cannot trust this king at all
Such appetite for wench and wine
On coffin pie, he loves to dine
Lost to love, health and kindness
This greedy king, his royal highness
Melts all the silver pennies down
A copper mix to serve the crown
And when we try to pay for bread
The baker sadly shakes his head
You'll need many, many more of those
Those pennies with the coppernose
And when we ask who stole the silver
He shakes his head, jowls aquiver
And when he lies, his nose does shine
The rosy hue of summer wine
Old Coppernose points 'cross the sea
To French or Moorish enemy
Blinding us to the real thieves
Bedecked in ruffs and silken sleaves
Pennies for our lives of toil
His face stamped on their silver foil
We see our foe beneath the skin
Old Coppernose with ginger chin

TWILIGHT
Fiery prince with golden sunlit hair
Moonlit lady's skin so fair
Fingers reach across the changing skies
Gold and silver seeking lover's prize
He calls, she falls
Calling, falling for you
He calls, she falls
Calling, falling for you
He is drifting into night's sleep
She is rising on the Western shore
Dreams of falling into love's embrace
Burning kiss on coolest lips so pure
She calls, he falls
Calling, falling for you
She calls, he falls
Calling, falling for you
He is waking in the Eastern dawn
She was waiting though the night was long
Fingers reach across the changing skies
Sleep folds shadows on her waning eyes
He calls, she falls
Calling, falling for you
He calls, she falls
Calling, falling for you
Fiery prince with golden sunlit hair
Cool white lady's skin so fair
Almost touching, but there is no chance
Sun and moon in endless lover's dance
We call, we fall
Calling, falling for you
We call, we fall
Calling, falling for you

Hallow's Eve

Hallow's Eve
Hallow's Eve cool moonless night
Kith and kin now rise to life
From old bones comes silent song
Silent song voiceless comes
This day to aid the dead to rest
A feast for souls we love the best
We heed their call from muted tongues
Silent song, voiceless comes
Crumbling bones beneath our feet
Given life on Hallow's Eve
Life and death become as one
Silent song, voiceless comes
Shadows weave in shades of night
Spirits dance in cool starlight
Father's ghosts reach for their sons
Silent song, voiceless comes
In dawn's window, silence reigns
Frost clings fast to silken chains
Twilight calls the dead to sleep
Silent song for now does cease
Their bones at rest in death's reprieve
A dreamless sleep 'til Hallow's Eve
When once again their ghosts will come
And on the wind, their silent song
